DIY: Floral Style and Framework [Photo]

I had been thinking about a few projects that I wanted to do before tossing out the notions and paper crafting items that I had amassed for some time. So, I wanted to revamp a few items that I had around in the home, as well as perusing my arts and crafts bin for extra inspiration.

Calendar Art:

Frame #1: by using printed kitchen liners or contact paper (this will be your background), cut them to your frame measurement (for insertion), which, of course is slightly smaller than the actual frame. Adhere the printed liners/contact paper to a piece of cardstock or cardboard of the same measurement. For this frame version, I used an engraved stone that I found on eBay.

Place the stone on top of the printed background, gluing it in place. Let dry. Insert your finished background with the stone into your frame or shadow box. I decorated my finished piece with flowers on the top of the frame.

Frame #2: I decided to reuse old picture frames for this project to create artwork from a past calendar. After cutting selected images and text from my calendar, I measured and positioned the main photo to the frame. This project works wonderfully if you have a shadow box as well. Set your photo in place, and insert inside the frame. Secure frame closed. That’s it! You can change it as you like, just by reusing your favourite calendar photos.

Frame #3: to make a more elaborate piece, I used paint chip cards which are great for design crafts, along with my calendar image. I cut my paint chip cards into various shapes, then placed them in the layout that I wanted. Next, glue all of the pieces together, then insert the image in the frame. Secure frame closed.

Floral Centrepiece

With the same theme of floral, I used more of the remnants from my printed paper. But, instead of an oval piece in the shape of my tin, I cut an asymmetrical shape of the print, because I wanted to fold it over the edge of the tin. I had a bundle of glass marbles from other projects, so I filled my tin with them for colour.

Next, I used and cut silk flowers to start the design of my floral arrangement. Lastly, to secure my floral stems, I used the printed floral paper as tape to hold a few of the stems down, since the paper had adhesive on the opposite side.

That’s it! I hope you enjoyed my fun and easy spring DIY.

Thanks Roz! Yes, holding on to calendars are my favourite for photos or decorating boxes as well. Finding the time and space is often hard, but I reckon once you get started, it will be a marvellous and enjoyable creative "cutting and pasting" session.

Thanks! Sounds like you are ready to get started on those projects soon! I have a few magazines from that period, but only special ones that I loved. Moving too much has left me tossing many of them unfortunately. 🙂 Enjoy the weekend.

I'm so glad to see that you too hold onto old calendars and pictures that might be reused and recreated into something else. It makes me feel better about the stacks of lidded boxes I have, filled with cut-outs and cards and interesting images – all just waiting for that mythical time and space when I'm going to make collages with them all.
I like your inspiring use of materials.
