Jars Céramistes | Top Dinnerware & Stoneware

Prepare to swoon over ceramic beauty.

My favourite pieces from Jars’ Dashi collection are the stunning Dashi plates. Lovingly shaped in the heart of Drôme, France, each piece tells a story, as you will see from the beautiful pieces I have featured below.

The pieces are formed from raw stoneware with a soulfully tactile finish. Something to love about these designs is that the ash glazes are brushed or ladled by hand, the result is natural curves of the clay beneath, with equal parts rustic charm and refined artistry.

I’m so chuffed to share this collection and beautiful line from Jars. Seriously, as I write this, I could kick myself for only getting one of the dashi plates in charbon. It has charcoal glaze, and contrasts of black and grey. You know when you’re not certain whether or not a colour or style will suit you or your aesthetic but you go all in anyway? Yes, that’s what I did and I can tell you I’ve fallen in love with the very piece that I wasn’t sure about.

The allurement in this collection lies in the details: a layered ash glaze technique that creates subtle tonal shifts and glossy finishes. This entire collection fascinates me, it really shows the imperfect silhouette of each vessel, and texture of grog clay—stoneware flecked with fired particles. There are also other hues on offer, such as pink, jade green and ivory.

What to Buy | Investment Pieces

If you’re a keen entertaining hostess like me, the Wabi XXL Calebasse (Large calabash) offers a grander scale, with dimensions of 50 x 44 cm and a height of 7 cm. Like its smaller counterpart, it features the distinctive ash glaze technique and a unique visual feast for the eyes even without food in it. Let me tell you, this piece is super-sized, it’s a platter-like style, and a piece that’s ideal for serving a series of accompaniments or as a centrepiece that adds an artisanal touch to any setting. Although I handwash it, it’s also dishwasher-friendly. I can also see using this for fresh-cut florals or a striking edible centrepiece. Think, seasonal fresh-cut florals!

Honestly, if I had to choose only two pieces to buy, it would be the large Wabi plate (platter) and the Dashi plate in Charbon. They work well for my lifestyle and entertaining aesthetic.
