These kid-friendly crafts are especially fun for a pirate party. There is only one that will need an adult to complete, due to the usage of a match light. Enjoy!

DIY 01: Pirate’s Booty – (Gold)

This is a really playful take on pirate’s booty. Use fish crackers or golden biscuits to fill these containers.

materials and tools for DIY

Materials:

  • Circular tins or acrylic containers with lids
  • Scissors
  • Jute twine, or craft rope
  • Hook charms
  • Crackers or biscuits
  • Tape – (Optional)
  • Faux gold coins
  • Hot glue gun with glue sticks

Method:

  1. 1. Remove the lids from the containers. Set aside.

  1. 2. Add a dab of hot glue to one hook charm, then place it on top of the lid. Let it dry completely. Repeat for each lid that you want with a hook.

  1. 3. Add hot glue to one coin and adhere it to the centre of the lid. Let it dry completely. Repeat for each lid that you want with a coin.

  1. 4. Fill each container with your snacks, close with the lid. Then, using jute twine, wrap the twine around the container two or three times, and tie in a knot. Use scissors to cut the excess jute twine. *Alternatively, if you don’t want to make a knot, you can use tape to hold the jute twine in place at the back of the container.

*Alternative materials/opitons below: You can use craft paper rolls instead of dowels, you can use rope instead of twine, etc.

DIY 02: Map Scroll Takeaways (For guests) – *Adult needed*

Create these make scrolls as gifts and takeaways for your pirate party. Make them custom if you prefer by adding names of your guests to the map. You can find all of the materials pretty much at your local arts and crafting store or art supplier.

DIY steps for a paper scroll

Materials:

  • Paper map
  • Small wooden dowels (two per map)
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun with glue sticks
  • Gold leaf sheet – 1
  • Matches or a lighter, for burning edges of the map
  • Craft glue or a heavy-duty glue stick
  • Ruler – (Optional)
  • Gloves – (Optional)

Method:

  1. 1. Roll out the paper map flatly on a working surface, and cut two to four rectangular pieces. Turn each piece vertically so that they are beside each other.

  1. 2. Use hot glue to adhere one wooden dowel to the top of one map, going horizontally, then glue another dowel on the bottom of the map.  *The dowels should be lengthwise at the top and the bottom (See photos). Let it dry completely before proceeding.

  1. 3. Ageing the Map Paper: Carefully, use a match or a lighter to burn some of the edges to the paper. You can also age the paper with tea, as I did. I used coffee and tea spills then let it dry. Use scissors to cut excess around the map, if necessary. Slightly crumble or fold the map to create creases in the map.

  1. 4. Add craft glue to the map in random formations, then use a dry brush to add gold leaf to the map, using a brushstroke motion. Set aside to dry completely.

DIY 03: Bucko Phrases – (Words of pirates)
